He holds a PhD in Mathematics, is full professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTECH (UPC) and consultant professor at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). Serrat is head of the Institute of Statistics and Mathematics Applied to Building (IEMAE-UPC) and an academic at the Institute of Mathematics of the UPC (IMTech) in the Statistics, Optimisation and Operations Research section.

His research revolves around the analysis of survival and reliability data, and the implementation of uncertainty and stochasticity in different heuristic optimisation techniques. He has participated in and led national and international research projects and, in particular, with the Barcelona City Council on the durability of the building stock in large urban areas. In addition, he has extensive experience in the publication of articles, participation in conferences, supervision of doctoral theses and research stays.
