Two hundred years ago, Mary Shelley published one of the most important fictional stories in history. Despite the two centuries that have passed, the impact of Frankenstein has been immense. The dream of manipulating or even creating life from inanimate matter is today being rewritten by synthetic biology, artificial life, bioengineering and regenerative medicine. What are the limitations of these disciplines? What have we learned about life and death? The lecture raises the issue of how the science of the time influenced the construction of Mary Shelley's story with an eye to the future as well.
