What does this future imagined in the film tell us about our present day?

In the year 2159, humans are divided into two groups: the rich, who live on the space station Elysium, and everyone else, who survive as best they can on a devastated and overpopulated Earth. The earthlings, increasingly desperate to get off the planet, will soon rise up to try to achieve equality through insurgency.
