What is the structural relationship between resource scarcity and social inequalities? How can we imagine future class struggles in an overpopulated world, affected by climate change and on the verge of collapse? Is it really possible to consider life outside planet Earth without the supply of its resources? How can we imagine future space colonies? What can we expect from life in space? What does this future imagined in the film tell us about our present day?
Elysium, Neill Blomkamp, USA, 2013.
In the year 2159, humans are divided into two groups: the rich, who live on the space station Elysium, and everyone else, who survive as best they can on a devastated and overpopulated Earth. The earthlings, increasingly desperate to get off the planet, will soon rise up to try to achieve equality through insurgency.
A portrait of the future class struggle, with a sweeping and visually powerful mise-en-scene.
