Professor of Political Science at the University Paris 8, research fellow at the Maison Française de Oxford and associate member of Nuffield College and the Oxford Department of Politics and International Relations. He has been deputy director of the Marc Bloch Center in Berlin and is an honorary senior researcher at the Institut Universitaire Français, one of the most prestigious French institutions.

He has been a visiting scholar and professor at internationally recognized centers such as Harvard, Yale, University College London, Academia Sinica in Taipe, the Science Po in Paris, the Science Po in Lille, the Institut für Sozialforschung in Frankfurt and the universities of the Basque Country, Tsinghua and Peking, Frankfurt, Berlin, the Catholic University of Louvaine, the University of Catania, Neuchâtel and Lausanne.
