Santiago Elena
Virologist and evolutionary geneticist
CSIC Professor at the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio), where he leads the Evolutionary and Systems Virology group. He is also an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute. Graduated in Biochemistry by the University of Valencia (UV), he completed a PhD thesis in Evolutionary Genetics.
His work has always focused on the study of the mechanisms by which RNA viruses adapt to their hosts and how this adaptation results in the manipulation of cellular resources for their own benefit. For this work he combines experimental evolution, advanced molecular biology, molecular epidemiology and mathematical modeling. Among other honors, he is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS).
