PARTICLE PHYSICS WORKSHOP

DISCOVERING THE LHC

The Particle Physics Workshop aims to show secondary school students who are interested in physics one of its most important emergent fields: particle physics. For a day, the students will be able to explore this area with lectures, which the general public will be able to follow via streaming; they will do practical work under the supervision of physicists and later they will discuss the results obtained with other participants from around the world.

The Institute of Sciences of the Cosmos of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB), in collaboration with the Catalan Society for Physics, has been organizing this workshop since 2005. The data with which it works have been obtained with the LHCb experiment at CERN, in which researchers in the Experimental Particle Physics Group of the ICCUB have made important scientific contributions. The activity includes a connection via videoconference with physicists at CERN and with other groups of students from all over the world to discuss their results, coordinated by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG).

When the session is over, the students will be able to visit the laboratories of the University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Physics, home of the ICCUB.
