Annelien L. Bredenoord
Expert in ethics and biomedical innovation
Full professor of Ethics of Biomedical Innovation at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC) and the Utrecht University (UU), and member of the Senate of the Dutch Parliament as of 2015. As of 2019 she is D66 floor leader.
Bredenoord is Head of the Department of Medical Humanities, an interdisciplinary group dedicated to bioethics, health law, medical history and narrative medicine. Her own research group seeks to identify, evaluate and promote policies and practices that ensure that biomedical innovation develops in an ethically and socially responsible matter. Bredenoord co-authored over 100 articles in high impact factor journals (including Science or Nature). Her research is supported among others by the prestigious UE Horizon 2020, KWF, NWO and ZonMw programmes.
Furthermore, she is member of several national and international committees such as past Chair of the Ethics Committee of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), member of the Board of ZonMw, member of the Council of Medical Sciences of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and former member of The Young Academy (KNAW). She is also a member of the Supervisory Board of Amsterdam UMC, and she chairs the Supervisory Board of the Metropole Orchestra, the world’s leading pop and jazz orchestra. She is frequently invited in popular media to discuss the ethical aspects of biomedicine, including RTL and BBC, among others.
