MATHEMATICAL ART

SCULPTURES BY RINUS ROELOFS

The nine steel sculptures by Rinus Roelofs exhibited in Plaça de la Ciència at CosmoCaixa include three kinds of structures: dual polyhedrons, columns in the form of hernias or knots and perforated leaves which are folded in a repetitive pattern. The sculptures by this artist show mathematical concepts such as dual polyhedrons, star polyhedrons or twists and movements on planar tessellations, which give rise to 3D structures based on 2D surfaces.

The abstract constructions invite us to imagine new spaces and structures. It seems that structures like this shouldn’t be able to exist, but the consistency of the sculpture shows us that it is possible. We shall be surprised and amused by elements that relate to the rest in a strange way, but which remind us vaguely of children’s games, in which everything is surprising but nothing seems impossible.
