THE BIG DATA OF BOOKS
The language has evolved, in ways that often recall the Darwinian process of evolution, with words that succeed and others that disappear.
In this workshop addressed to secondary school pupils and teachers, we shall introduce the concept of big data in an easy-to-understand framework of reference that allows for various formats and levels of presentation. Using a tool to analyse millions of digitized books (published from 1800 to 2000), we shall study the changes in the importance of certain words over time. With Google Ngram we shall explore the historical evolution of characters, literary styles, diseases, historical events or technological terms, and we will get more than one surprise.
