THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN
SEASON PHENOMENA: SCIENCE-FICTION FILMS
A mysterious organism falls on a small town in New Mexico, and the population is virtually wiped out by an epidemic. A group of scientists goes there to find out what it is and where such a lethal pathogen came from. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, the film The Andromeda Strain (1971), by Robert Wise, offers us a great opportunity to ask questions that are still unanswered and very topical. Before the screening, we shall talk about it in a discussion with experts Santiago Elena and Maria Lluch.
What is the origin of the virus? Could a great pandemic like the Spanish flu of 1918 happen again? Can a synthetic virus be created? Could we use viruses as allies in the struggle against diseases? Current research offers answers, but also generates new, hugely important questions for our future.
